It is interesting to note that Robinson’s first choice for subjects to sculpt into the Needles 4 were Western heroes. This reflects the time period in which he was working and the prevailing attitude of Manifest Destiny. While the eventual subjects of his sculptures were more reflective of the local area, it is interesting to imagine what his original vision might have looked like.
It is interesting to note that at one point, Susan B Anthony was supposed to be included on the Mount Rushmore National Monument, and President Jefferson was supposed to be on President Washington’s right side. However, for unknown reasons, these plans were never carried out.
